The Mariano Sanctuary, written by the Portuguese friar Agostinho de Santa Maria, with information passed
on by Frei Miguel de São Francisco, from the Convent of Santo Antônio do Rio de Janeiro, is one of the
oldest publications on the imagery found in Portuguese America at the beginning of the seven hundred.
Having as its theme the imagery present, our object of study are the images of Nossa Senhora do Monte
da Piedade de Magepe, Nossa Senhora da Guia da Marinha and Nossa Senhora do Carmo do Sertão,
found in the Parish of Magé. Analyzed in their historical and iconographic aspects, they contributed to the
knowledge about the production of anonymous saint makers that met the demand of the devotees in the
Rio de Janeiro.
